Wood fibre insulation: Masonry Wall Applications

Brickwork is still the most familiar construction type in the UK, but the u-value through a typical 225mm wall is barely 2.0 W/m2K. Using wood fibre insulation, the simplest way of beefing up thermal performance is by application of rigid render-grade slabs complete with a coat of render which can improve u-values up to below 0.2 W/m2K, depending on depth of section.

Another method of building up a section to achieve very low u-values is to apply timber spacers between which the higher performing flexible wood fibre can be installed. Options for finish can be both render and ventilated cladding.

Sections can be quite substantial compared with petrochemical alternatives, but advantages in the reduction of environmental impact as well as providing for high levels of decrement and fabric breathability.
