Earth Centre: Conference building
Completed in 2001 Bill Dunster's Earth Conference Building was designed as part of the late and lamented Earth Centre near Doncaster.
The building uses about 80% recycled materials including steel, rubble, radiators and telegraph poles. Utilising solar thermal, PV and wind power, it generates 60% of its own energy. The structure comprises of thermally massive freestanding inclined walls formed from gambions containing locally crushed aggregate together with polystyrene insulation, the whole sitting astride a concrete water tank acting as a thermal store.
