Somerset Earth Science Centre
Mark Kingley's East Mendip Study Centre is a new build Zero Energy Development in Stoke St Michael, Somerset. The environmentally responsive building addresses and sits in harmony with its elevated lake setting in John Wainwright & Co Ltd’s, Moons Hill Quarry.
The study centre provides a teaching resource for groups of local school children and adults to learn more about the landscape, geology, geography, history, industry and industrial archaeology of Somerset and the Mendip Hills.
The new thermally efficient building has been traditionally constructed to provide high thermal mass and a low energy load. The project includes a number of environmental features which include a sedum roof; a 4% natural daylight factor throughout; sunpipes; ground source heat pump; heat recovery ventilation system; water conservation strategy; a waterless urinal; natural odourless paints and marmoleum floor finishes. The centre’s energy is supplied by a 6KW Proven Wind Turbine, providing approximately 15,000KWh per annum.
