Integer Housing
INTEGER is an action research network that applies authoritative research to real life projects. Since 1998, INTEGER has completed a range of new build housing projects in the UK demonstrating the application of intelligent and green principles.
Westlea HA INTEGER Home, Cherhill
Bree Day and Westlea HA Architects, Anthony Ward Structural Engineer, Oscar Faber Services Engineer, i&i limited Intelligent Systems.
The brief for the project was to create two family houses, with a minimum
of three bedrooms. The rent for the homes was to be geared to reflect
the savings in the running costs of the properties. The main construction
feature was the TRADIS structural timber frame. The walls, upper floors
and roof were manufactured as pre-formed panels comprising timber ' i
' beams and skins of panelboard to form a sandwich. This was all done
in a factory off-site and filled with cellulose fibre insulation.
Cladding was in Western Red Cedar for low embodied energy and efficient
maintenance.
Attention was paid to minimising the use of 'virgin' materials through
specifying PFA cement, recycled wood elements and recycled plastic products.
Ventilating the houses was achieved through stack effect ducts from kitchens
and bathrooms, assisted through a small fan.

Sandwell MBCouncil, Lyttleton Street, Lyng Estate, West Bromwich
Cole Thompson Architects, Anthony Ward Structural Engineer, Oscar Faber Services Engineer, i&i limited Intelligent Systems
Sandwell wanted to use INTEGER to challenge the perceived
mediocrity in current homebuilding practice, and so increase the expectations
of the public regarding social housing. A mixture of six one-bed apartments,
six two-bed apartments, two three-bed houses and a single two-bed house.
Construction: Timber wall panels with cellulose insulation, western cedar
cladding mixed with brick and two storey solar conservatories.
Ventilation is through using stack effect through ducts from kitchens
and bathrooms. Water heating is from solar water heaters linked to a central
boiler. Grey water is recycled for toilet flushing.
Sandwell MBC said 'What we have learned is that we can make efficiency
savings. We can do INTEGER at less than Housing Corporation indicative
costs – if we’d had 40 homes we’d have done it here'.

concrete in foundations), cedar cladding, Alpine Sedum roofs, timber frames
with factory fitted windows, timber windows with a factory applied non-solvent
based stain,.
The blocks were designed so that all services are located in a vertical
core, with the bathroom and kitchen back-to-back allowing all services
